iD Film Academy - Program Overview
This teen movie and film camp is located at UC Berkeley and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area.
The iD Film Academy offers 2 weeks of intensive study in filmmaking and post-production for teens.
Filming on location in San Francisco and Berkeley, students will learn from top tier instructors who have an
insider’s knowledge of the industry and film festival circuit. Students in this teen film camp will use
Canon® GL-2 Digital Video Cameras, Apple computers and the industry-standard editing programs Apple® Final Cut Pro® and Adobe® After Effects®, to produce and edit a film for their portfolio – an amazing documentary of their experience.
Students will be taught how to create a film from start to finish, from writing a treatment to camera operation, editing and DVD authoring. In our movie camps, students learn the basics of sound design and incorporate voice-overs, sound effects, interviews and music into their films. Students will also get an introduction to film theory through evening film screenings. By discovering the language of production and the importance of marketing, students in our filmmaking camp will be able to take their films from the editing room to the public.
Working on team and personal projects from concept to completion, our graduates leave the academy with a professional-looking portfolio, media kit and the tools to not only compete, but also excel, in the extremely competitive world of film production. The iD Film Academy is perfect for beginning students looking to break into filmmaking, or advanced students looking to get a leg up on the competition. Our only requirement is that students have a passion for filmmaking.
We chose the San Francisco Bay Area for our digital video academy because it is a hub for filmmaking, and a beautiful back drop for our students' documentaries - The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, The Exploratorium, cable cars, Pier 39, North Beach and more; it doesn’t get more cinematic. iD Film Academy students will tour the San Francisco State University’s cinema department. A tour of the newly renovated SFSU facilities will include: the 2500 square foot sound stage and post-sound studios (including Foley studio). Students may also visit places that include: the San Francisco Film Society, the Film Arts Foundation and The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
Activities
Academy students enjoy extra privileges appropriate for their environment and maturity levels. While we maintain standard supervision ratios, teens will still feel a sense of freedom. After each day’s instruction, students may want to spend their evenings engaging in traditional activities that may include Ultimate Frisbee or soccer. If sports aren’t their thing, student’s can sign up for an instructor workshop. Some topics may include stop-motion animation or music composition for film. Nightly movie screenings will expose students to film theory through deconstruction and analysis. Students may be allowed to travel in groups within local boundaries and time constraints with the understanding that these privileges may be enjoyed only if they remain responsible. Our supervising staff will always be in the nearby vicinity and visually check-in with teens periodically. The famous coffee shops and record stores of downtown Berkeley and San Francisco are a great backdrop of students to spend time hanging out and getting to know each other. Activities and excursions are supervised by iD Film Academy staff.
